The Digital War: How AI and Blockchain Serve as Catalysts in the Fight Against Human Trafficking

Sohrabian-The-Digital-War

In the world of human trafficking, the internet is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it facilitates trafficking operations. On the other, recent technological developments aid efforts to combat the global human trafficking crisis: Artificial intelligence (“AI”) can identify online trafficking patterns, and blockchain could increase the traceability of financial transactions.

Yet, despite the potential that technological solutions hold, the U.S. fails to adequately regulate online human trafficking. Current laws focus only on online platforms that allow trafficking activity, failing to hold traffickers accountable. Fighting this problem requires amending existing laws, imposing stricter regulations, and enhancing cross-jurisdictional collaboration.

This Note argues for a comprehensive legal approach that imposes AI-driven audits for supply chains, stronger Know Your Customer procedures for cryptocurrency transactions, and enhanced liability for online platforms under the Communications Decency Act.
