{"id":5567,"date":"2018-03-29T10:47:57","date_gmt":"2018-03-29T14:47:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncjolt.org\/?p=5567"},"modified":"2020-06-04T20:52:32","modified_gmt":"2020-06-04T20:52:32","slug":"bitcoin-environmental-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journals.law.unc.edu\/ncjolt\/blogs\/bitcoin-environmental-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin and Its Environmental Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Satoshi Nakamoto is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/briefing\/21677228-technology-behind-bitcoin-lets-people-who-do-not-know-or-trust-each-other-build-dependable\">most widely known<\/a> as the alleged creator of Bitcoin, the world\u2019s first functioning cryptocurrency. For BitCoin to work, Nakamoto had to invent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/briefing\/21677228-technology-behind-bitcoin-lets-people-who-do-not-know-or-trust-each-other-build-dependable\">Blockchain<\/a>, which may prove more impactful on society than cryptocurrencies.<br \/>\nBlockchain technology <a href=\"https:\/\/lawlibproxy2.unc.edu:2147\/articles\/987354\/how-blockchain-could-change-the-energy-industry-part-1\">functions<\/a> as a \u201cdecentralized, online ledger maintained by computer networks\u201d which verifies and records \u201ctransactions, then distribute[s] the ledger to all users.\u201d The ledger <a href=\"https:\/\/lawlibproxy2.unc.edu:2147\/articles\/987354\/how-blockchain-could-change-the-energy-industry-part-1\">allows<\/a> each user of the system \u201cto ensure the validity and accuracy of the transaction and prevents one party to the transaction from lying about the details or failing to perform.\u201d<br \/>\nThe validity and accuracy of blockchains are instituted through a system known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/economist-explains\/2015\/01\/economist-explains-11\">proof of work<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/blockchainhub.net\/blockchains-and-distributed-ledger-technologies-in-general\/\">cryptocurrency systems<\/a> such as BitCoin, LiteCoin, and Ethereum, each transaction can only be completed by members of the system who compete against others to solve a complicated mathematic puzzle. Regarding BitCoin specifically, the members of the system who complete these puzzles are known as \u201cminers,\u201d and they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/economist-explains\/2015\/01\/economist-explains-11\">rewarded<\/a> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/80-of-all-bitcoins-already-mined-only-42-million-coins-left-until-supply-cap\">certain number<\/a> of BitCoins for their efforts in completing the transaction after an additional 99 BitCoin transactions have taken place. This creates an incentive to not only validate the current transaction, but to also ensure that future transactions are correct.<br \/>\nWhile the mining process of BitCoin\u2019s proof of work system ensures that the blockchain stays intact, it also tends to <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/07\/technology\/bitcoin-energy-environment\/index.html\">absorb a tremendous amount of electricity<\/a>. This is so because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wweek.com\/news\/business\/2018\/02\/21\/bitcoin-miners-are-flocking-to-oregon-for-cheap-electricity-should-we-give-them-a-boost\/\">individuals<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/11\/07\/technology\/russian-bitcoin-farm\/index.html?iid=EL\">countries<\/a> are taking constructing massive coin mining facilities so as to win the race to complete transaction puzzles and thereby generate revenue. As a result, states such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/articles\/wyoming-house-unanimously-approves-two-pro-blockchain-bills\/\">Wyoming<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wweek.com\/news\/business\/2018\/02\/21\/bitcoin-miners-are-flocking-to-oregon-for-cheap-electricity-should-we-give-them-a-boost\/\">Oregon<\/a> have adopted legislation which attempts to encourage miners to move operations to their states using the incentive of cheap electricity.<br \/>\nThe potential environmental effects posed by proof of work blockchain-powered cryptocurrencies is overwhelming. Today, BitCoin alone <a href=\"https:\/\/digiconomist.net\/bitcoin-energy-consumption\">requires<\/a> the same amount of electricity as three million homes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/07\/technology\/bitcoin-energy-environment\/index.html\">Scientists theorize<\/a> that by 2019, the energy required to power BitCoin would be equivalent to the amount of electricity currently used by the entire world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Coin mining centers are usually set up in places which offer the cheapest electricity. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbntimes.com\/en\/companies\/is-the-bitcoin-more-of-an-environmental-gamble\">China<\/a>, which has comparatively cheap energy provided by coal, has been able to mine the largest number of coins.<br \/>\nWhile there are potential environmental downsides associated with blockchain technology when used to power cryptocurrencies, the technology itself could positively affect society in the long-term. The Linux Foundation created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/hyperledger-fabric-chaincode-practical-byzantine-fault-tolerance-and-v1-0\/\">new type of blockchain technology<\/a>, known as Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT), and installed it in a program known as HyperLedger. PBFT, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/02\/23\/bitcoin-blockchain-consumes-a-lot-of-energy-engineers-changing-that.html\">endorsed by companies<\/a> such as IBM and Intel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altoros.com\/blog\/hyperledger-fabric-chaincode-practical-byzantine-fault-tolerance-and-v1-0\/\">utilizes a voting system<\/a> where other users vote on a member to validate each transaction, thereby eliminating the competition required by the proof of work system.<br \/>\nThe energy efficiency offered by new blockchain systems such as PBFT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/02\/23\/bitcoin-blockchain-consumes-a-lot-of-energy-engineers-changing-that.html\">allow<\/a> governments \u201cto scale for business needs,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/02\/23\/bitcoin-blockchain-consumes-a-lot-of-energy-engineers-changing-that.html\">which<\/a> \u201cmeans processing significantly more transactions per second at minimal cost, while accommodating an ever-expanding user base.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/chile-adopts-blockchain-technology-for-national-energy-grid\">regulatory energy agency<\/a> of Chile recently decided to use \u201cBlockchain to authenticate information like marginal costs, average market prices, fuel prices, and compliance with renewable energy law.\u201d In the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/biglawbusiness.com\/more-states-eye-blockchain-for-records-businesses\/\">eight states<\/a> have passed legislation authorizing its use to \u201corder studies of the technology for government use, legalize blockchain-based electronic signatures,\u201d and permit corporations to use blockchain to maintain corporate records and \u201ctrack stocks on the digital ledger.\u201d There is pending blockchain legislation in thirteen other states <a href=\"https:\/\/biglawbusiness.com\/more-states-eye-blockchain-for-records-businesses\/\">directed at tapping<\/a> the technology for purposes such as managing tax records, business licenses, Medicaid rosters, food stamps, and creating digital marketplaces for snow removal, recycling, and other services.<br \/>\nThe appeal of the technology has garnered an equal amount of attention from the commercial sector, which has been followed by the filing of a copious number of <a href=\"https:\/\/lawlibproxy2.unc.edu:2147\/articles\/1017186\/\">blockchain patents<\/a> from different areas of industry. Regarding energy, blockchain will <a href=\"https:\/\/lawlibproxy2.unc.edu:2147\/articles\/987354\/how-blockchain-could-change-the-energy-industry-part-1\">allow<\/a> \u201cconsumers to buy and sell energy from multiple providers in an open market using transparent and secure payment systems in real time.\u201d Oil dealers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalgamblingandthelaw.com\/news\/blockchain-technology-replaces-paperwork-oil-trading\/\">developing<\/a> \u201ca blockchain technology based platform for physical trading of oil.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbinsights.com\/research\/industries-disrupted-blockchain\/\">Other potential uses<\/a> involve voting identification, car leasing, trading stocks, selling real estate, insurance, health records, tracking guns, wills and inheritance, and finance.<br \/>\nAs a result, there are entire firms dedicated to dealing with the actual and potential implications which blockchain technology poses to different industries.
