Silent Sam Topples in the Wake of UNC Protesters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>School is back in session, but not without controversy. As the 2017-2018 school year ended and summer began the protests surrounding the controversial Confederate monument, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/education\/who-is-silent-sam\/3148347\/\">Silent Sam<\/a> died down. Last night on the eve of the 2018-2019 school year Silent Sam came <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/08\/20\/us\/unc-silent-sam-confederate-statue\/index.html\">crashing down.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chancellor.unc.edu\/about-chancellor-folt\/\">Chancellor Carol L. Folt\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0released a statement that\u00a0&#8220;Last night&#8217;s actions were unlawful and dangerous, and we are very fortunate that no one was injured.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.unc.edu\/2018\/08\/21\/message-from-chancellor-carol-l-folt-4\/\">Folt also stated,<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;police are investigating the vandalism and assessing the full extent of the damage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper&#8217;s Office <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NC_Governor\/status\/1031733997930536960\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0the following statement, &#8220;The Governor understands that many people are frustrated by the pace of change and he shares their frustration, but violent destruction of public property has no place in our communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Comment below to share your thoughts and opinions!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School is back in session, but not without controversy.
