appeals court ruled that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/reuters\/2018\/01\/05\/us\/05reuters-baltimore-abortion.html\">Baltimore law<\/a>, which required pregnancy clinics to post signs in their waiting rooms disclosing that they do not offer or refer women for abortions, violated the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge temporarily barred Washington, D.C. from enforcing part of a recently passed law requiring cautionary labels on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/dc-politics\/judge-rules-against-dc-labeling-law-for-wet-wipes-citing-first-amendment\/2017\/12\/23\/d7d9068e-e7f7-11e7-a65d-1ac0fd7f097e_story.html?utm_term=.2d54ca43ce37\">\u201cflushable\u201d wet wipes<\/a>, ruling the city\u2019s approach probably violates the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge denied a company\u2019s request to block the House Intelligence Committee from demanding bank records for 70 of the private investigative firm\u2019s transactions in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/public-safety\/us-judge-sides-with-house-panel-in-records-demand-from-firm-behind-trump-dossier\/2018\/01\/04\/a808200a-f19a-11e7-97bf-bba379b809ab_story.html?utm_term=.357d1cbbb6c3\">Trump dossier investigation<\/a>, ruling that the request did not violate the company\u2019s First Amendment rights to political speech and association.<\/p>\n<p>The first six Inauguration Day protestors to go to trial were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/public-safety\/the-first-inauguration-day-protest-trial-ended-in-acquittals-but-more-than-150-defendants-await-their-day-in-court\/2017\/12\/29\/d2624730-e746-11e7-833f-155031558ff4_story.html?utm_term=.4de061e8d3ed\">acquitted<\/a> by a jury on all charges of rioting and destruction of property.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge permanently barred Arizona from enforcing a law that banned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/answer-sheet\/wp\/2017\/12\/28\/federal-judge-tells-arizona-it-cant-ban-mexican-american-studies\/?utm_term=.ad3e29fd194c\">Mexican American studies programs<\/a>\u00a0in Tuscon schools, stating that the law violated the First Amendment by denying students the \u201cright to receive information and ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A federal appeals court ruled that the federal trademark laws prohibiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2017\/12\/18\/barring-the-f-word-and-other-immoral-or-scandalous-trademarks-is-unconstitutional-court-rules\/?utm_term=.89a2140945d7\">immoral or scandalous language<\/a> are unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>A federal appeals court ruled Idaho\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-idaho-animalabuse\/court-voids-idaho-ban-on-secret-farm-videos-revives-some-curbs-on-probes-idUSKBN1ET2C5\">\u201cag-gag\u201d\u00a0 ban<\/a>, which prohibits recording secret videos and lying to enter factory farms for the purpose of exposing animal abuse, unconstitutional on free speech grounds.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>State Court News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An Oregon appeals court upheld a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/oregon-appeals-court-upholds-penalty-against-bakery-owners\/2017\/12\/28\/9526f7f2-def0-11e7-bbd0-9dfb2e37492a_story.html?utm_term=.1058b78fcf49\">penalty against Oregon bakery owners<\/a> who refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding.<\/p>\n<p>A Michigan judge lifted a restraining order against a controversial right-wing group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/answer-sheet\/wp\/2017\/12\/27\/judge-lifts-restraining-order-against-project-veritas-in-case-involving-teachers-union\/?utm_term=.6ffc25436144\">Project Veritas<\/a>, which barred publication of information involving its alleged infiltration of a teacher\u2019s union.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>State Legislation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A South Dakota ballot measure banning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2018\/01\/04\/us\/ap-us-ballot-measures-keep-out.html\">out-of-state fundraising<\/a> for citizen\u2019s initiatives will\u00a0 go before voters in November.<\/p>\n<p>An Indiana lawmaker plans to file legislation that would require the Indianapolis Colts to offer fans refunds if Colts players <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/2017\/12\/28\/colts-fans-offended-anthem-kneeling-could-receive-reindiana-lawmaker-pushes-legislation-refund-sport\/986895001\/\">kneel during the national anthem<\/a> at home games.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trump administration reverses previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/acts-of-faith\/wp\/2018\/01\/04\/in-a-shift-trump-administration-says-houses-of-worship-can-get-direct-fema-funding-after-disasters\/?utm_term=.ba4959d0a3b6\">funding rules<\/a> to now allow houses of worship damaged during natural disasters to rebuild using federal funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s private lawyer sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trump-book-lawsuit\/trump-lawsuit-over-white-house-book-nonstarter-legal-experts-say-idUSKBN1ET2HC\">cease-and-desist letters<\/a> to author and publisher of the book \u201cFire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House\u201d and Steve Bannon stating he would take legal action to block the book\u2019s
