In similar cases, the ACLU has <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/legal\/344793-aclu-files-lawsuit-against-maryland-kentucky-governors-over-social-media-censorship\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">sued the governors of Maryland and Kentucky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The West Virginia ACLU <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3911409-Wvnd-19902323086.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">filed an amicus brief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> in the case of coal giant Bob Murray suing comedian John Oliver for defamation. Among the brief\u2019s arguments were subheadings such as, \u201cAnyone Can Legally Say, \u2018Eat Shit, Bob!\u2019\u201d Read Vanity Fair\u2019s coverage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2017\/08\/john-oliver-bob-murray-aclu-west-virginia-amicus-brief\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Missouri Attorney General <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/business\/article164728852.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">asked the court to dismiss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> Backpage.com\u2019s First Amendment lawsuit against him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking a Kenner, La. law that prevents city <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2017\/07\/court_blocks_kenner_ban_on_cit.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">employees from working on city political campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Google has filed a motion for an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-fights-canada-order-global-search-results\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">injunction in U.S. federal court<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, seeking to block a Canadian Supreme Court ruling requiring Google to take down search results for pirated products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Third Circuit ruled that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/local\/region\/2017\/08\/04\/State-court-says-nonreligious-groups-can-t-opt-out-of-insurance-coverage-for-birth-control\/stories\/201708040161\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">secular organizations that oppose birth control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> cannot opt out of providing insurance coverage for birth control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Fifth Circuit reversed a lower court ruling blocking a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/outward\/2017\/08\/01\/fifth_circuit_considers_en_banc_rehearing_in_mississippi_hb_1523_lawsuit.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Mississippi religious accommodations law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, saying that the plaintiffs lacked standing to challenge the act. The district court had invalidated the law under the establishment clause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>White House News<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Jeff Sessions announced that the DOJ will route <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4887864\/trump-leaks-crackdown\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">more resources to pursuing and punishing leakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, raising concerns and reigniting the debate over the reporter\u2019s privilege.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback will be nominated as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/07\/26\/brownback-religious-freedom-trump-241007\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">ambassador at large for religious freedom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, a position within the State Department charged with promoting religious freedom globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Other News &amp; Commentary<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">An Economist\/YouGov poll found that 34% of Americans agree that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2017\/jul\/28\/media-wars-34-of-americans-approve-court-ordered-f\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">courts should be able to fine media organizations for biased or inaccurate reporting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">A recent survey found that 95% of millennials believe <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/865685738\/Millennials-approve-of-religious-freedom-as-a-choice-but-dont-know-what-it-means.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">religious freedom is important<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.
